11 Books, 4 pages, and 1001 Arabian Nights

Posted on 09 December 2008

When I first read this story, I figuratively patted myself on the back for being American.  According to this study, Americans read 11 books per year.  If you would have asked me who read more between the British and the Americans I would have said the British.  Then I remembered that Britain has pretty much been invaded by muslims, so these muslims are probably dragging down the literacy rate with their four pages per year.  After my arm got figuratively tired from figuratively patting myself on the back I looked at the numbers one more time and the number 11 stuck out to me.  A closer examination reveals that this number is a little inflated.

7 books in the Harry Potter series + 4 books in the Twilight series = 11 books

It sounds like if we really want the Arab muslims to become literate, we need to introduce them to Stephanie Meyer or J.K Rowling.  These two should team up and write a steamy, fantastical sequel to Scheherzade’s 1001 Arabian Nights.
