I suppose that you juxtapose this definition against a supposedly liberal extreme relativist stance? I would caution against that. An interesting thing about “liberalism” (read: leftist political philosophies, not classical liberalism), as you put it, is that many of these strains of thought also point to transcendentally signified moral goods every bit as much as “traditional morality” does (assuming the more narrow version of this that I must guess you are operating from). However, for liberals, these moral goods tend to be things like “inalienable human rights,” as opposed to “the word of God.” I suppose I am saying that I would challenge that notion (which I gather from your past writing) that liberalism=ardent relativism. Rick Shweder (full disclosure: he is my dissertation committee chair) writes about this topic as “liberal imperialism,” analyzing movements such as the global anti-FGM campaign as basically a missionary movement for liberal moral goods, which these activists no doubt conceive of in transcendental terms. However, I doubt that these are the same goods you are pointing to when you gloss “traditional morality.” It is really important that we are careful not to pretend that politically liberal philosophies can’t and aren’t just as imperialistic as any other, which is where I see a major limitation to your (admittedly paraphrased) liberalism=extreme relativism equation. In which case, my question still stands: what do you mean by “traditional morality?”

As people stop doing what they should, government seems to feel the need to step in. I am not for prayer in public schools but I’m also against the absurd things being done to public school kids in the name of “diversity” too.

Instead of looking at the specific issues of school lunch nutrition and banning public prayer, instead look at the broad social trends behind those issues. What is the connection between overly ambitious governmental regulatory regimes and the decline of religious influence and traditional morality in a society?

Schools should offer food which is healthy. I know you are involved in school lunches and when I was in school we had our fair share of tater tots and fish sticks but we did not have the option of eating burgers and fries every day. There was one meal given out per day you either took it or didn’t.

Not sure I get the connection between lunches and prayers though.
